Navigating Capital Gains Tax can feel like stepping into a maze without a map. One small misstep — a missed relief, an overlooked allowance, or a miscalculated gain — can cost thousands, or even more.

At The Tax Faculty, we know that for most people, dealing with HMRC isn’t just about numbers; it’s stressful, confusing, and often overwhelming. That’s why we exist: to guide our clients through the complexities of CGT with clarity, expertise, and a level of personal service that turns what feels like a daunting challenge into a manageable process.

Welcome to The Tax Faculty

For as long as he can remember, Charles has been immersed in the world of tax. Apart from a few formative years working in a Cash & Carry during sixth form and university, his entire career has revolved around understanding, interpreting, and applying tax law. Following his university studies, he joined HMRC, where he held a variety of positions in tax compliance. His experience included time as a Capital Gains Tax Inspector and eventually led him to the senior level of Grade 7 Tax Professional. During this period, he also underwent specific training to conduct investigations under the Contractual Disclosure Facility through Code of Practice 9 (COP9). Alongside his professional progression, Charles achieved a First Class Honours Degree in Studies in Taxation, further deepening his technical knowledge and expertise.

After nearly two decades at HMRC, Charles transitioned to a similarly senior role in private practice, gaining invaluable experience “from the other side of the fence” in defending clients through some of the most serious and complex investigations HMRC can conduct. He also contributed articles to leading tax publications and websites, sharing insights drawn from his extensive career.

“During my career I have seen the best and worst that HMRC have to offer. While working for the department I experienced the incredibly detailed training HMRC provide to their staff, and since leaving I have seen how dramatically their actions can affect the lives of those they investigate,” Charles reflects.

Seeking a new challenge and a way to make a tangible difference for clients navigating the often confusing world of tax, Charles founded The Tax Faculty LLP. “From my time in HMRC, and more so in private practice, I realised that dealing with HMRC can be incredibly stressful for most people, whether it’s filing tax returns, responding to letters and enquiries, or facing investigations. Many don’t know who to turn to for expert support and that was the basis for The Tax Faculty."

Meet our Managing Partner

At The Tax Faculty, our vision is to transform the way people experience tax. We aim to create a space where individuals and businesses alike can feel confident that they are supported by professionals with the expertise, insight, and dedication to achieve the very best outcomes. From the outset, we take a proactive approach — ensuring that every client has clarity, control, and a strategy designed to get things right the first time. When disputes with HMRC arise, our mission is to stand alongside our clients as advocates, leveraging our knowledge and experience to challenge errors, protect interests, and resolve matters in their favour.

Since founding The Tax Faculty LLP, Charles has seen firsthand how expert guidance can make a real difference. A client facing VAT assessments totalling nearly £100,000 thought they had no choice but to pay. Through careful review and application of the law, the liability was reduced to under £10,000 — a clear example of the power of specialist advice. In another case, a client initially faced a CGT bill of over £300,000; with precise planning and timely intervention, this was reduced to under £80,000, with a significant portion of the tax deferred. These outcomes demonstrate the impact of thoughtful, knowledgeable support.

Central to this vision is taking the time to truly understand each client’s circumstances, goals, and long-term objectives. Every client is spoken to directly, ensuring that solutions are tailored, practical, and aligned with their wider financial aspirations. Over hundreds of engagements, this approach has earned The Tax Faculty a reputation not just for technical excellence, but for a deeply personal, client-focused service.

Our Driving Force

Charles’s dedication and expertise have been recognised through a Capital Gains Tax award, highlighting his standing as a leading authority in the field.

For our clients, this means confidence: whether navigating CGT on property, investments, business assets, or other complex matters, they know they are supported by a team combining unrivalled technical knowledge with a genuine commitment to clarity, reassurance, and the best possible outcome. At The Tax Faculty, that is the standard we aspire to every day.
